War On Want Produce Report Into The Dangers Of The TTIP

With the greatest threat to not only the NHS and employment rights, but also on health and safety at work and to the public; the TTIP is also a threat to democracy according to Trade Unions and NGOs across Europe. IT will allow free trade across the globe with no restrictions to profits of international companies, and no restrictions to the detrimental effect it will have on everyone's lives across the globe.

The CWU along with other major Trade Unions are totally opposed to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) currently being negotiated in secret by the EU and the USA. But our government are clearly in favour of it and deny it will have any impact upon the NHS and ability of any future government from repealing the Health and Social Care Act 2012.

Further, the proof of this being the case can clearly be seen by the fact that Germany is being sued in a private court in Washington DC in the US by Vattenfall for €4.7 billion because the German government has decided to replace nuclear power with renewable technologies.

These secret investor court hearings are taking place behind closed doors, and are the same courts which will be used against the UK government if the TTIP goes through. The tribunals are biased in favour of investors, with corporate lawyers often acting as the judges and parties.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is a comprehensive free trade and investment treaty currently being negotiated – in secret – between the European Union and the USA.

As officials from both sides acknowledge:

The main goal of TTIP is to remove regulatory ‘barriers’ which restrict the potential profits to be made by transnational corporations
on both sides of the Atlantic.

Yet these ‘barriers’ are in reality some of our most prized social standards and environmental regulations, such as labour rights, food safety rules (including restrictions on GMOs), regulations on the use of toxic chemicals, digital privacy laws and even new banking safeguards introduced to prevent a repeat of the 2008 financial crisis.

The stakes, in other words, could not be higher.

The War On Want booklet, written by John Hilary, Executive Director of War on Want, explains in short what TTIP is and how it will affect the lives of all of us if it comes into force.

The booklet can be downloaded from the E-Library Database or direct by clicking the pic above.
